Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 8 Golden Eagles Pick Up A Big Midweek Victory

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team celebrated its first game since moving into the national top-10 with a big win over Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The Golden Eagles, ranked No. 8 in the country in the United Soccer Coaches poll released on Tuesday, put in a masterful performance on Wednesday, scoring a pair of first-half goals to take the lead and going on to a 5-0 victory over the Toros in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match at University Stadium. Cal State LA (8-1, 5-0 CCAA) sits atop the conference standings with 15 points and has a six-point lead over Cal State Dominguez Hills and Chico State.

Robin Lindahl and Leonardo Nogueira each had a goal and an assist for the Golden Eagles, who took control of the game with a pair of goals late in the first half. Tim Klefisch scored his second goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 37th minute and Edgar Jimenez Perez notched his first goal of the season in the 44th minute to stake the Golden Eagles to a 2-0 halftime lead.

The Golden Eagles took a 3-0 lead on an own goal when a dangerous cross from Jonathan Hinojosa was inadvertently knocked into the goal by a Cal State Dominguez Hills defender in the 58th minute. Lindahl and Nogueira completed the scoring with goals in the 63rd and 74th minute.

Cal State LA had a slim 12-11 advantage in shots, while Cal State Dominguez Hills had a 3-2 edge in corner kicks. Alexander Brems made four saves for his seventh shutout of the season. His best stop came midway through the first half when he made a leaping grab to deny Cal State Dominguez Hills forward Joshua Varon while the game was still tied.

Justin Fairchild and Julian Tafolla-Cisneros combined for four saves for the Toros.

Nogueira, for the second straight game, had the contest's first big scoring chance, but his strike after receiving a nice pass from Daniel Simonis struck the post and Fairchild was able to dive on the ball to keep it out.

The Golden Eagles, though, finally broke through in the 37th minute thanks to a great individual play by Hinojosa and a perfect penalty kick from Klefisch. Hinojosa got off a strong shot that was saved by Fairchild, but Hinojosa was fouled trying to get to the rebound and Klefisch made no mistake on the ensuing penalty kick.

Jimenez Perez completed a nice passing sequence that started with Nick Nelson to Hinojosa to Jimenez Perez, who flicked the ball into an open goal to make it 2-0.

Hinojosa was involved in the third goal as well as he made a strong move down the right side and sent in a cross that wound up in the Toros' goal to make it 3-0 in the 58th minute.

Laurin Weiland started the scoring sequence for the fourth goal, passing to Nogueira, who sent Lindahl in alone on the right side. Lindahl fired off a beautiful shot high and just inside the near post for his team-leading seventh goal of the season.

Nogueira scored his fourth goal of the season in the 74th minute when he pounced on a rebound of a shot by Lindahl and knocked it in for a 5-0 lead.

Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a road game at San Francisco State.
