LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team showed some resilience Sunday in a hard-fought California Collegiate Athletic Association game at University Stadium.
The Golden Eagles were stymied into the second half by a combination of posts, crossbars and a talented Sonoma State goalkeeper before finally breaking through for a 1-0 victory. Cal State LA (7-1, 4-0 CCAA) had a 12-3 shots advantage in the opening half, but it took until the 14th shot, a nifty flick from
Leonardo Nogueira in the 57th minute for the Golden Eagles to break a 0-0 tie. The Golden Eagles have 12 points in conference play and are alone in first place.
It was an impressive display throughout for the Golden Eagles, who controlled the pace of play and dominated possession. Cal State LA had a 19-7 edge in shots for the game and an 11-0 advantage in corner kicks. Cal State LA goalkeeper
Alexander Brems needed to make only one save for his sixth shutout of the season.
Sonoma State goalkeeper Arturo Ornelas had a strong game for the Seawolves (2-4-2, 0-3-1 CCAA). He made seven saves and his defense made another another clearance off the line to keep the score close.
Nogueira had a tremendous game for the Golden Eagles, firing off six shots, four of them on goal. He had another outstanding chance hit the post in the opening moments of the game.
Antonio Rosas and
Morten Bjoershol each had a pair of shots in the contest.
The lone score of the game came after a brilliant passing sequence that included
Jorge Orellana and
Daniel Simonis. Orellana started the run with a pass to Simonis and he sent it in to an onrushing Nogueira, who directed it inside the far post for his third goal of the season.
Up until that point, it was a day of frustrating near-misses for the Golden Eagles. It all started in the first minute when Nogueira came free and fired off a shot that hit the post and bounced away. A few minutes later,
David Elizaga had a shot go off the crossbar and bounce out.
A corner kick later in the first half by
Tim Klefisch almost resulted in a goal when
Laurin Weiland sent it in to
Antonio Rosas, but his point-blank shot was saved by Orenelas.
Breki Einarsson had a good look with the goalkeeper out, but his shot sailed just high and
Jonathan Hinojosa had a shot that was just tipped over the crossbar by Ornelas to keep the game scoreless.
Eddie Leon also had an outstanding look in the second half when he chipped the ball just before Ornelas could get to it, but his chip shot went just wide of the far post.
Cal State LA will return to action on Wednesday with a home game against second-place Cal State Dominguez Hills at 12:30 p.m.Â
