STOCKTON -- Cal State LA's baseball team saw its run in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament come to a stunning end Friday at Banner Island Park.
The Golden Eagles built an 11-1 lead, only to see Cal Poly Pomona score two in the seventh, seven in the eighth and three in the ninth to grab a shocking 13-11 decision in an elimination game. Cal State LA (28-24) falls out of the tournament, while the Broncos (30-23) advance to the final day of the tourney on Saturday.
The result also has regional implications - Cal State LA was seventh in the region entering the tournament and Cal Poly Pomona was eighth. The winner of the CCAA Tournament earns the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA West Regionals.
Jorge Garcia was 2-for-5 including a three-run home run in the fifth inning that gave the Golden Eagles their 11-1 lead.
Andre Gregory was 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI,
Jordan Peabody was 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI,
Anthony Moreno was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI and
Noe Garcia was 2-for-4 with one run scored and two RBI.
Dylan Suppan gave the Golden Eagles his best start of the season, going five innings and allowing only three hits and one run with four walks and seven strikeouts. Cal Poly Pomona, though, struck for 12 runs and 14 hits over the final three innings.
Cal State LA had all 11 of its runs and all 12 of its hits in the first five innings.
Cal State LA jumped out to an 8-0 lead after three innings, including a five-run start in the first, all coming with two outs.
Spencer Sundahl dropped a bloop single into left field to drive in Gregory with the first run of the game and, after a walk to
Nic Bereaud, Peabody delivered a two-run single to make it 3-0. Moreno and
Noe Garcia added run-scoring singles to give the Golden Eagles a quick 5-0 lead.
Cal State LA scored three more times in the third to make it 8-0. Moreno doubled in one run,
Noe Garcia singled in another run and Gregory tripled to right-center for the final run of the inning.
Moreno was hit by a pitch and Gregory walked in front of a long three-run home run by
Jorge Garcia to make it 11-1 in the fifth.
Cal Poly Pomona, though, got its offense untracked over its final three at bats, pulled to within one run entering the ninth inning and ultimately took the lead on a two-run home run by Cody Martin.
Cal State LA had a 4-0 record over Cal Poly Pomona during the conference regular-season and the Golden Eagles certainly missed a golden opportunity to make it 5-0.
