SAN MARCOS -- Cal State LA's baseball team endured a quiet day on offense in a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader at Cal State San Marcos.
The Golden Eagles managed only six hits in the twinbill and dropped both games to the Cougars, 9-3 and 6-2. Cal State LA (22-19, 19-17 CCAA) lost three of four games in the series to Cal State San Marcos (19-23, 14-22 CCAA).
Sean Watkins was 1-for-4 with two runs batted in in the opener, while
Randy Buenrostro had the other hit.
Spencer Sundahl drove in the other run with a sacrifice fly.
Anthony Ayala and
Andre Gregory scored runs.
James Mendez got the start for the Golden Eagles and allowed seven hits and five runs in 5 2/3 innings. He walked four and struck out four.
Cal State LA took a 2-0 lead in the third when Watkins delivered a two-out, two-run double to drive in Ayala and Gregory.
Cal State San Marcos, though, got two runs in the third and three runs in the sixth to take the lead. The Cougars added two runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
Sundahl's sacrifice fly scored Buenrostro with Cal State LA's other run in the seventh.
Cal State LA fell behind 4-0 after four innings in the seven-inning nightcap and couldn't catch up. Gregory drove in Cal State LA's first run with a bases-loaded fielder's choice and
Adam Gordon drove in the other run in the sixth with a pinch-hit single to score Watkins.
Dylan Suppan started and gave up five hits and three earned runs over 3 2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out six. Watkins finished up and allowed two runs and two hits over the final 2 1/3 innings.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a game at UC San Diego.
