Golden Eagles Start Quickly With Win Over Seawolves

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team got off to a quick start in its California Collegiate Athletic Association series opener against Sonoma State on Friday.

The Golden Eagles broke open a 2-2 tie with five runs in the fourth and went on to a 9-4 win over the Seawolves at Reeder Field. Cal State LA (20-14, 17-12) pulled to within three games of first place in the CCAA and locked in a second-place tie with UC San Diego. Sonoma State (20-15, 16-13 CCAA) had a six-game winning streak snapped and slipped a game behind the Golden Eagles and Seawolves.

Nate Adams and Angel Lerma combined to limit the Seawolves to seven hits and four runs over nine innings. Adams went the first four, allowing two hits and two runs while walking four and striking out four. Lerma pitched the final five innings and got the win, allowing five hits and two runs while walking two and striking out five.

Anthony Ayala went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI, while Sean Watkins was 2-for-4 with one run scored and three RBI. Andre Gregory also had two hits and scored three runs, while Nic Bereaud went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Joshua Lenney had a solo home run for the Seawolves, while Zach Guardino went 2-for-5 with one run scored.

Anthony Moreno walked all four times he batted on Friday. He scored one run and drove in a run.

Gregory reached on an one-out error in the first and took third on a double by Jorge Garcia. Watkins singled in Gregory for the game's first run and Bereaud singled in Garcia to make it 2-0.

The Seawolves tied it at 2-2 in the second inning, but Cal State LA scored five times in the fourth to take the lead for good. Moreno and Noe Garcia drew walks to open the inning and Armett Johnson bunted them over to second and third. Ayala, Gregory, Watkins and Bereaud had run-scoring singles in the inning.

Cal State LA added two runs in the sixth on bases-loaded walks to Watkins and Moreno.

The Golden Eagles will return to action on Saturday with a doubleheader against Sonoma State beginning at 1 p.m.
