Golden Eagles Get Defensive And Earn Series Split

TURLOCK -- Cal State LA's baseball team got defensive on Sunday and earned a California Collegiate Athletic Association series split with Stanislaus State.

The Golden Eagles played an error-free game for the first time in the series and beat the Warriors, 8-5, at Warrior Field. Cal State LA (16-9, 13-7 CCAA) had committed eight errors in the first three games, but got some outstanding defense in the series finale.

Saxon Andross had a strong start for the Golden Eagles to improve to 3-1. Andross gave up just six hits and three runs over six innings and allowed only one run after the first inning.

Gabe Ramos, Nate Adams and George Alamillo combined to limit the Warriors to only one run over the final three innings, although the Golden Eagles had to survive some anxious moments in the latter innings.

Nic Bereaud went 2-for-5 with three RB to lead the Golden Eagles' offense and he also figured in two of the biggest defensive plays of the game. First, in the fifth inning, with Cal State LA holding a 5-3 lead, Bereaud pounced on an attempted squeeze bunt by Michael Wyatt and alertly threw home to get Braeden Oki for the first out of the inning. Andross then got out of the inning without further damage to preserve the two-run lead.

Then, with the bases loaded and two outs in the seventh, Bereaud made a diving stop to snare a hard-hit ball by Jarrett Veiga and end the inning to keep the Golden Eagles up by an 8-4 margin.

Anthony Ayala also had a big defensive play, snagging a hard-hit ground ball up the middle, stepping on second and turning an inning-ending double play in the eighth inning.

Bereaud also had the key hit of the game, a two-run double in the seventh that gave the Golden Eagles an 8-3 advantage.

Anthony Moreno was 2-for-5 with two RBI, Ayala and Adam Gordon scored two runs each and Jordan Peabody also had a a pair of hits.

Sean Watkins had a long double, scored twice and drove in a run and just missed a two-run home run to left early in the game.

Cal State LA, which was disappointed by a 9-0 loss on Saturday, jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead on Sunday. Bereaud had a bases-loaded single to drive in the first run, Moreno singled in a pair of runs to make it 3-0 and Noe Garcia reached on an error with two outs to make it 4-0.

Stanislaus State got two runs back in the bottom of the first on a two-run triple by Andrew Wheat, but Andross settled down after that and was outstanding the rest of the way.

Cal State LA made it 5-2 in the fifth on Watkins' run-scoring double to center, but Stanislaus State made it 5-3 with Oki's triple in the fifth.

Cal State LA extended its lead to 6-3 in the sixth on a run-scoring single by Peabody and made it 8-3 in the seventh on Bereaud's big two-run double that scored Gordon and Watkins.

Alamillo came on with two on and one out in the ninth and, after giving up a single to load the bases, got the final two outs for his first save of the season.

Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with the opener of a four-game series at home against Chico State..
