TURLOCK -- Cal State LA's baseball team endured a tough day at the ballpark Saturday at Stanislaus State's Warrior Field.
The Golden Eagles managed only five hits and committed four more errors in a 9-0 loss to the Warriors in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game on Saturday. Cal State LA (15-9, 12-7 CCAA) entered the four-game series riding an eight-game winning streak, but has lost two of the first three games against Stanislaus State (15-12, 11-10 CCAA).
The Golden Eagles had their chances early, but left eight runners on base through the first five innings. The Warriors scored twice in the second, once in the third and once in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead into the seventh inning. Then things got strange. The umpiring crew lost track of outs and both teams ran off the field thinking there were three outs and the inning was over. In fact, there were only two. After a lengthy discussion, the Warriors resumed their at bat and promptly scored three more times to make it 7-0.
James Mendez pitched 6 2/3 innings and gave up six hits and seven runs, although only two of them were earned.
Tyler Murphy was a workhorse for the Warriors, going eight shutout innings. He worked around six walks and struck out four. He also stranded 11 Cal State LA runners without allowing a run. Kevin Hahn struck out the side in the ninth to end it.
Jordan Peabody had a pair of hits for the Golden Eagles, while
Andre Gregory,
Jorge Garcia and
Adam Gordon also had hits.
Andrew Wheat had three hits for the Warriors, including a solo home run in the fourth. Jarrett Veiga drove in three runs.
The key sequence in the game came in the fourth inning. Trailing 3-0, the Golden Eagles had the bases loaded with one out and
Noe Garcia hit a sharp ground ball that seemed destined to reach left field. Instead, Michael Wyatt made a diving stop and started an inning-ending double play that included a nice turn at second by second baseman Vinny Margiotta.
Then, in the bottom of the inning, Wheat led off with his first home run of the season. So, instead of the Golden Eagles possibly headed for a big rally in the top of the frame, the Warriors emerged unscathed and extended their lead to 4-0.
That's how it stayed until a wacky seventh. Ethan Utler fouled out to start the inning, Brandon De La Guardia reached on an infield single and Vinny Margiotta grounded out for the second out. Cal State LA left the field thinking there were three outs and Stanislaus State did the same, preparing for the top of the eighth. The umpires finally got together and determined there were only two outs and Mendez had to come back out after lengthy delay and try to finish the inning. He induced a pop-up from Braeden Oki into shallow right field, but the ball was allowed to drop, allowing De La Guardia to score from second to make it 5-0. Veiga grounded a two-run single into right field later in the inning to make it 7-0.
Cal State LA will conclude the series on Sunday with a single game beginning at noon.
