LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team came painfully close to avenging an early-season loss to Point Loma.
The Golden Eagles were strong in doubles and took a 2-1 lead entering singles play, but the Sea Lions turned the tables by winning four of six singles contests and pulling out a 5-4 victory at the Cal State LA Tennis Complex. Cal State LA (5-8) lost two of the singles matches in three sets to Point Loma (11-3). Cal State LA had lost to Point Loma, 7-2, earlier this season in San Diego.
The Golden Eagles appeared to gain some momentum heading into singles after a huge win at No. 2 doubles. Cal State LA's
Luciana Di Laura and
Isabella Lopez prevailed by an 8-7 score over Carolina Cuevas and Gabi Armas to give the Golden Eagles a 2-1 lead. Cal State LA's No. 3 doubles team of
Chelsey Ruiz and
Mariko Sagara earned the Golden Eagles' first point with an 8-4 win over Ellie Gamble and Nicole Camaratta.
Di Laura earned a straight-sets victory at No. 3 singles over Shelby Groeneveld, 6-1, 6-3, and Lopez did the same at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-2, over Ellie Gamble.
The Golden Eagles, though, fell in a pair of three-set matches at the top of the order,
Elizaveta Sokolova was edged by Point Loma's Nikki Newell, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 singles and
Amanda Schneider was edged by Point Loma's Carolina Cuevas, 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.
Cal State LA will return to action next Sunday with a match at Holy Names.
