Ericka Taylor Leads Golden Eagles In 2018

2018 Cal State L.A. Women's Cross Country Season Summary

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A.'s women's cross country team had a 2018 season highlighted by an outstanding individual achievement.

Senior Ericka Taylor concluded her fantastic running career at Cal State LA and she had a race to remember in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships. Taylor aggressively ran with the lead pack and finished sixth in the conference, earning All-CCAA honors for her effort. The 2017 CCAA 800-meter champion in outdoor track and field, Taylor was the No. 1 runner for the Golden Eagles in all eight races.

She became the first Cal State LA runner to earn All-CCAA honors since 2013 and her sixth-place finish was the best for a Golden Eagle since Sabrina Lopez finished fourth, also in 2013.

The Golden Eagles hosted the CCAA Championships at Cal State San Bernardino and Taylor's all-conference effort definitely highlighted the day. She finished with a time of 21:39.6 over a 6,000-meter course on the Cal State San Bernardino campus.

Cal State LA finished 12th in the conference and completed the season at the West Region Championships, where the Golden Eagles wound up 25th. Taylor finished 43rd in the race to lead the team for a final time.

Taylor also earned a CCAA Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week award after finishing third overall at the Redlands Invitational. It marked the second straight year that Taylor earned a weekly award from the conference.

Cal State LA's team received a big boost from two newcomers who were main contributors throughout the season. Junior Rebecca Harris was one of the team's top-five in all eight competitions, while freshman Belen Luna was also a top-five runner in all eight races.

The Golden Eagles also got strong performances from seniors Janet Meza-Avila and Damaris Hamilton. Meza-Avila competed in eight races, while Hamilton competed in seven.

Meza-Avila also did well in the classroom and earned a CCAA Fall All-Academic Award for a second straight season.
