Golden Eagles Get An Impressive Win In CCAA Opener

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team turned in quite a performance in its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener.

The Golden Eagles shot 53 percent and beat Stanislaus State, 94-83, Saturday afternoon in University Gym. Cal State LA (4-2, 1-0 CCAA) had four players score in double figures in its best game of the season. Devin Means led the way with 23 points and six rebounds in 26 productive minutes.

Jihad Woods had 16 points, four rebounds and six blocked shots, while Anthony Fitzpatrick had 14 points and four rebounds and Jordan Rogers had 13 points, four rebounds and four assists.

Andy Cleaves had 21 points and eight rebounds to lead Stanislaus State (3-2, 0-1 CCAA), while Vasilije Saraba had 19 points and Ty Davis had 18 points.

Ja'Sean Lewis had nine rebounds and four blocks, while Shacquille Dawkins, Fard Muhammad and Simon Okolue had seven points each.

Cal State LA shot 53 percent for the game (35-of-66), including 57.6 percent (19-of-33) in the first half. The Golden Eagles were also 13-of-30 from 3-point range., Stanislaus State shot 41.8 percent (28-of-67) for the game and was 7-of-23 from 3-point range. Stanislaus State had a big edge at the free-throw line, hitting 21-of-27 attempts, while Cal State LA made 11 of 16. Both teams had 38 rebounds.

Cal State LA, after falling behind by three points early in the game, took control with a 15-0 run accomplished with five straight 3-pointers that erased a 18-15 deficit and gave the Golden Eagles a 30-15 lead. Fitzpatrick tied it with a 3-pointer and Dawkins gave the Golden Eagles the lead. Means then followed with three straight 3-pointers give Cal State LA a 30-18 lead.

Stanislaus State closed to within four points at halftime, 48-44, after a 3-pointer by Cleaves, but Cal State LA started the second half with a 9-3 run to open up a 10-point lead, 57-47, and led by at least nine points the rest of the way.

Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a road game at Cal State San Bernardino.
