Golden Eagles Post A Big Win In San Bernardino

SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team shook off a slow start and recorded a big California Collegiate Athletic Association road win at Cal State San Bernardino.

The Golden Eagles erased an early 11-point deficit and took control with a tremendous run in the second half to beat the Coyotes, 72-66, Thursday night in Coussoulis Arena. Cal State LA (5-2, 2-0 CCAA) held Cal State San Bernardino (3-3, 0-2 CCAA) to just one basket in the first 13 minutes of the second half to take control of the game.

The Golden Eagles trailed by just two points at halftime, opened the second half with a 21-7 run and maintained that advantage the rest of the way.

Fard Muhammad had 18 points, five rebounds and four assists to lead the Golden Eagles, while Jordan Rogers had 16 points and was 4-for-5 from 3-point range. Devin Means had 11 points and seven rebounds, Jihad Woods had nine points, including a 5-for-5 performance from the free-throw line and Ja'Sean Lewis had seven points and four rebounds.

Cal State LA shot 39.3 percent overall (24-of-61) and knocked down 12 of 32 attempts from 3-point range. Cal State San Bernardino was 20-of-51 overall (39.2 percent) and 8-of-23 from 3-point range. Cal State LA was 12-of-14 from the free-throw line, while the Coyotes were 18-of-26. The Golden Eagles were out-rebounded, 43-26, but forced 23 turnovers while committing only nine. Cal State LA scored 32 points off the Coyotes' turnovers.

The Golden Eagles trailed by 11 points, 17-6, early in the first half, but a 3-pointer by Rogers got them started on their comeback. A 3-pointer by Means tied it at 23-23 and the Golden Eagles trailed by just two points at halftime.

Cal State LA got a basket from Rogers and a three-point play from Woods to take its first lead of the game, 39-36, and the Golden Eagles never trailed again. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Muhammad opened up a 55-43 lead for the Golden Eagles and completed a 21-7 run.

A 3-pointer by Rogers gave the Golden Eagles a 60-47 lead with 5:47 to go, but the Coyotes responded by scoring the next eight points to make things interesting. The Coyotes closed to within four points at 62-58, but Woods and Muhammad combined to go 8-for-8 from the free-throw line down the stretch to preserve the lead.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road game at Cal State East Bay.
