LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team went from jubilation to disbelief in a matter of 0.4 seconds Tuesday night in University Gym.
After apparently sending the game into overtime on a layup at the buzzer by
Shacquille Dawkins, the Golden Eagles instead found themselves stunned at the wrong end of an 80-78 decision to Azusa Pacific. The officials put 0.4 seconds back on the clock, which was enough time for the Cougars to throw a length-of-the-court pass from Jonathan Davis to Selom Mawugbe, who caught the ball while in the air, landed and then pivoted on the floor before putting up a shot that lifted Azusa Pacific to an unbelievable victory.
The Golden Eagles (2-1) did an incredible job in the second half, wiping out a 17-point deficit in the final 17 minutes and seemingly putting themselves in position for a second overtime contest in their first three games of the season. Cal State LA took a 71-70 lead on a jumper by
Jordan Rogers with six minutes to go, but Azusa Pacific responded with five straight points to regain the lead. One free throw by Dawkins and a pair of free throws by
Devin Means brought the Golden Eagles to within one point at 77-76 with 40 seconds to go and after Azusa Pacific's Darien McClain made one of two free throws with seven seconds left, Dawkins quickly brought the ball up court to tie the game at 78-78, setting up the wild finale.
Simon Okolue had 18 points and eight rebounds to lead four Golden Eagles in double figures. Dawkins finished with 16 points, while
Jihad Woods and
Jordan Rogers had 10Â points each.
Mandrell Worthy had 17 points to lead five Cougars in double figures. Davis had 13 points, McClain and Will Ferris had 12 points each and Gerritt Beetstra had 11 points.
Ja'Sean Lewis had nine rebounds for the Golden Eagles to go along with four points. Means finished with nine points and four assists.
After Azusa Pacific shot 53 percent in the opening half, including a blistering 10-of-20 from 3-point range, the Golden Eagles played much strong defense in the second half and limited the Cougars to just 32.3 percent shooting in the second period, including just 2-of-14 from 3-point range. Cal State LA shot 34.1 percent for the game and was just 6-of-28 from 3-point range. Azusa Pacific was 16-of-22 from the free-throw line and Cal State LA was 16-of-25.
Cal State LA had a 52-40 rebounding edge and committed 13 turnovers while forcing 20 by the Cougars.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday in another big West Region contest at Concordia-Portland.
