Golden Eagles Storm Back To Stun Concordia

PORTLAND, ORE. -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team continued its early-season success with another amazing comeback Friday night in Portland.

The Golden Eagles stormed back from a 22-point deficit in the final 16 minutes to stun host Concordia-Portland, 79-76, in the second game of the Concordia Oxford Suites Portland Classic. Cal State LA (3-1) outscored the Cavaliers (1-2), 38-13, over the final 16 minutes after trailing, 63-41, with 15:53 to go.

Devin Means had a monster second-half and scored 15 of his team-high 23 points in the last five minutes of the game. In fact, Means scored the Golden Eagles' final 15 points of the game as they went on a 15-2 run down the stretch to erase a late 10-point deficit.

Ja'Sean Lewis had 11 points, 11 rebounds and five steals, while Jordan Rogers had 11 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Jarrett Gray had 23 points and eight rebounds for Concordia.

It was the latest big second-half comeback for the Golden Eagles. In their opener, the Golden Eagles rallied from a 12-point deficit in the final five minutes of regulation and beat Concordia-Irvine, 77-74, in overtime at Biola. Then, in their home opener against Azusa Pacific on Tuesday, the Golden Eagles wiped out a 17-point deficit in the second half to tie the game late.

Simon Okolue had eight points and five rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Fard Muhammad had eight points and six rebounds.

Cal State LA shot 34.2 percent for the game (25-of-73), while Concordia was 29-of-77. The Golden Eagles were 8-of-28 from 3-point range, while the Cavaliers were 5-of-27. The Golden Eagles were 21-of-31 from the free-throw line, while the Cavaliers made all 13 of their attempts. Concordia had a 52-50 rebounding edge, while Cal State LA forced 20 turnovers and committed 18.

The Golden Eagles struggled early and trailed at halftime, 52-37, before falling behind, 63-41, with 15:53 to go. A quick 10-2 run sparked by five points from Okolue, a free throw from Rogers and a 3-pointer from Lewis closed the gap to 65-51. Rogers heated up and scored seven points during another Golden Eagle run, including a dunk that cut the margin to less than 10 points, 72-64.

Still trailing by 10, 74-64, Means went to work. He converted on a three-point play and then hit a pair of free throws to make it 74-69. After Concordia scored,  Means knocked down a 3-pointer to make it 76-72 with three minutes left. Two more free throws by Means made it 76-74 and a steal by Jihad Woods led to a Means layup that tied it at 76-76 with 1:17 to go.

Means put the Golden Eagles ahead with one free throw, 77-76, with 43 seconds left. A blocked shot by Lewis led to a rebound by Means and he was fouled and hit two more free throws to account for the final margin. Woods completed the win with a block on a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday at 3 p.m. with a game against Northwest Nazarene on the second day of the Concordia Oxford Suites Portland Classic.
