Golden Eagles Beat Eagles In Impressive Showing

LA MIRADA -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team turned in an impressive performance Saturday to complete a perfect weekend at the CCAA/PacWest Challenge at Biola.

The Golden Eagles had five players score in double figures in a 79-61 win over the host Eagles in Chase Gym. Cal State LA (2-0) had an standing weekend, toppling two top PacWest Conference teams. On Friday, Cal State LA beat Concordia-Irvine.

Devin Means had 13 points to lead the Golden Eagles in scoring for the second straight night. Shacquille Dawkins, Simon Okolue and Fard Muhammad had 12 points each and Jordan Rogers had 10 points.

The Golden Eagles used a 16-5 run to close the first half and take a 34-25 halftime lead and then went on an 11-0 run to break the game open early in the second half.

Cal State LA shot 41.3 percent (26-of-63) and limited Biola (1-1) to just 37 percent (20-of-54). The Golden Eagles were 9-of-22 from 3-point range, while the Eagles were just 6-of-22 and Cal State LA was an outstanding 18-of-19 from the free-throw line. The Golden Eagles had a 41-35 rebounding advantage and committed 13 turnovers to 15 for the Eagles.

The Golden Eagles trailed 20-18 in the first half, but a 3-pointer by Dawkins, a jumper by Rogers and back-to-back baskets by Means gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good at 27-20. A 3-pointer by Muhammad and a layup by Jihad Woods gave the Golden Eagles a 34-25 halftime lead.

The Golden Eagles maintained a 43-35 lead early in the second half before two free throws by Means, back-to- back baskets by Okolue, a 3-pointer by Rogers and a layup by Muhammad gave Cal State LA a 54-35 lead and the Golden Eagles kept a safe margin the rest of the way.

Cal State LA will return to action on Tuesday with the Golden Eagles' home opener against Azusa Pacific at 7 p.m.
