Golden Eagles Battle To Scoreless Tie With Coyotes

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team's hopes of a California Collegiate Athletic Association championship ended Saturday in a hard-fought scoreless draw with Cal State San Bernardino.

Needing a victory to keep first place, the Golden Eagles were held scoreless for just the third time this season in a 0-0 tie with the Coyotes. Cal State LA (12-2-3, 9-1-2 CCAA) entered the day in first place after a 4-0 win over Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday. The Broncos, though, beat Cal State Dominguez Hills, 1-0, on Sunday to retake the conference top spot. Cal State LA finishes second with 29 points, while Cal Poly Pomona gets the crown with 30 points.

The Golden Eagles clinched a first-round bye in the CCAA Tournament and will begin play in the semi-finals on Friday at UC San Diego between the winner of the UC San Diego-Chico State first-round match on Tuesday. Cal State LA won the 2017 conference tournament title and will be looking to repeat next week.

Cal State San Bernardino (11-5-1, 8-3-1 CCAA) wound up fourth in the conference and will host San Francisco State in a first-round match on Tuesday.

Cal State LA had a 21-13 edge in shots and a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks, but couldn't get one past Cal State San Bernardino goalkeeper Jacob Huber, who made eight saves for the shutout. Alexander Brems was also outstanding for the Golden Eagles with six saves as he notched his nation-leading 12th shutout of the season.

Cal State San Bernardino's Danny Ortiz had the game's first big scoring chance, but he sent a shot wide of the mark after breaking free down the middle of the field in the 16th minute.

Cal State LA's Tim Klefisch had a hard shot from the top of the box that Huber just got a piece of to keep out of the net. That set up a Cal State LA corner kick.

Huber made a diving stop on Jonathan Hinojosa's bid with about 25 minutes left in the game and he had another brilliant stop of a chance from Cal State LA's Robin Lindahl.

Daniel Simonis had a great chance in the first overtime period after a nice setup from Leonardo Nogueira, but Huber came up big again to keep the game scoreless.

Brems made three big saves in the second overtime period for Cal State LA to preserve the tie.

Before the game, Cal State LA honored its five seniors - Jorge Chavez, Edgar Jimenez Perez, Laurin Weiland, Jonathan Hinojosa, and Samuel Croucher in pre-game ceremonies.
