Zamora Helps Golden Eagles Run Past Cougars

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's Julian Zamora made one decisive run to help Cal State LA pick up an important California Collegiate Athletic Association victory.

Zamora raced downfield and weaved his way through defenders before placing a shot just inside the far post for the lone goal of a 1-0 Golden Eagle victory Friday night. Cal State LA (7-1, 2-1 CCAA) had difficulty cracking a defensive-minded Cal State San Marcos team, but Zamora's goal in the 50th minute provided the margin of victory.

It was Zamora's fifth goal of the season.

Cal State LA's defense was outstanding once again in front of goalkeeper Steven Barrera, who made one save while recording his fifth shutout of the season. The Cal State LA backline of Jose Orellana, Kareem Salem, Antonio Rosas and Morten Bjoershol did some good work for the Golden Eagles.

Zamora was a threat all night for the Golden Eagles and had a match-high six shots. He almost had his second goal of the night after a sequence in the 81st minute. Tim Klefisch ripped a shot that Cal State San Marcos goalkeeper Alex Franklin did a great job of keeping out of the net. Eddie Leon got to the rebound and sent a shot toward the net and Zamora tapped it in but was called for offsides.

Zamora also had a great chance in the 63rd minute after a pass from Robin Lindahl, but his shot went just wide of the far post.

Steven Eberle had four shots for the Golden Eagles, while Klefisch had three. Alex Franklin had nine saves for the Cougars.

Cal State San Marcos had the best scoring chance in the opening half, but a shot by Dante Longo hit the crossbar in the 36th minute.

Cal State LA ended the game with a 17-4 advantage in shots and a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a home game against defending champion UC San Diego at 2 p.m.
