Golden Eagles Battle To A Scoreless Tie With Tritons

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team had some good looks, but the Golden Eagles had to settle for a hard-fought draw Sunday with defending California Collegiate Athletic Association champion UC San Diego.

The Golden Eagles were held without a goal for the first time this season, but their defense was outstanding and a contentious match ended in a 0-0 tie. Cal State LA (7-1-1, 2-1-1 CCAA) and UC San Diego (4-1-3, 2-1-1 CCAA) remain tied in the conference standings with seven points.

Cal State LA had an 18-10 advantage in shots, while UC San Diego had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Cal State LA goalkeeper Steven Barrera made five saves, including a spectacular stop in the opening minutes of the game. Pedro Enciso made five saves for the Tritons, who weathered some lengthy periods of possession by the Golden Eagles and stood strong.

Tim Klefisch had an outstanding match for the Golden Eagles, especially in the first half when he was a force all over the field. He wound up with a team-high three shots in the game. Steven Eberle and David Elizaga were also strong throughout the match and also had three shots each.

Steven Ortiz had three shots, including two on goal, for the Tritons.

UC San Diego's best scoring chance came in the 10th minute when UC San Diego's Malek Bashti got a hard shot on net off a re-direction from point-blank range and Barrera smothered it.

The Golden Eagles thought they had taken a 1-0 lead in the 78th minute when Morten Bjoershol headed in a beautiful corner kick from Miguel Galvan Lara,  but the goal was disallowed because of a foul.

The next best chance came in the waning minutes of the first overtime when Zamora was sprinting in the box toward the UC San Diego goal, but a defender was able to just clear the ball out of danger as the final seconds ticked off. Cal State LA had two shots in the second overtime and UC San Diego had the only corner kick, but neither team could score.

Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a home non-conference match against conference rival Cal State Dominguez Hills at 7 p.m.
