Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Golden Eagles Start Quick In Big Win Over Toros

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team was firing on all cylinders Thursday night in an important non-conference game against California Collegiate Athletic Association rival Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The Golden Eagles exploded for three first-half goals and went on to a 4-1 victory over the Toros at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State LA (8-1-1) equaled its season-high for goals and bounced back nicely from its first game without a goal - Sunday's 0-0 tie with UC San Diego.

Steven Eberle scored eight minutes into the game and leading scorer Julian Zamora added two more goals to give him seven on the season. Antonio Rosas contributed his second goal of the season and Robin Lindahl had a pair of assists.

Steven Barrera had four saves in goal for the Golden Eagles. Cal State LA had a string of three straight shutouts snapped when Cal State Dominguez Hills (6-3) scored early in the second half.

Cal State Dominguez Hills had a 21-13 advantage in shots and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks, but Cal State LA had the more dangerous attempts as the Golden Eagle defense did a good job forcing the Toros to take most of their shots from distance.

Cal State LA took a 3-0 lead in the first 36 minutes of the game. Eberle got the ball rolling when he was sent in alone on a nice pass from Lindahl and knocked the ball past Cal State Dominguez Hills goalkeeper Chase Gentry and into an empty net for his third goal of the season.

Zamora set up the Golden Eagles' second goal when he sent in a nice cross into the box, where Rosas was able to fire off a quick shot inside the far post in the 24th minute.

Zamora made it 3-0 in the 37th minute when he was open in front of the goal and knocked in a cross from David Elizaga.

The Toros nearly made it 3-1 just before halftime when Barrera made a big stop on Matt Lockwood from point-blank range. Lockwood got to the rebound first and fired another shot toward the goal, but the Golden Eagle defense knocked it away to preserve the 3-0 lead.

Cal State Dominguez Hills started quickly in the second half and cut the deficit to 3-1 in the 49th minute. Cal State Dominguez was pressuring and Barrera was forced to leap high to punch away a cross. The ball, though, was taken by the Toros' Manuel Paez and he promptly fired it inside the far post for his second goal of the season.

Zamora closed the scoring in the 61st minute. Miguel Galvan Lara sent a cross into the box and the Toros tried to clear it, but Zamora pounced on the ball and fired a wicked left-footed shot from outside the box inside the near post for his seventh goal of the season.

Cal State LA will return to action with a road game at Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday, Oct. 6.
