LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA men's soccer team endured a long day at the office on Thursday, but the wait was ultimately worth it.
Cal State LA's game against Bethesda, originally scheduled for 1:30 p.m. was pushed back because of extreme heat and the Golden Eagles wound up posting a 4-0 win as the second game of a doubleheader with Cal State LA's women's soccer team. Playing for the first time on Cal State LA's new state-of-the-art turf field, the Golden Eagles scored a pair of goals in each half to earn a well-played victory in their season opener.
Julian Zamora,
Damian Roszczyk,
Hakon Laugsand and
Rigoberto Maciel picked up the goals for Cal State LA, which also got a pair of dazzling saves from goalkeeper
Steven Barrera. The senior goalkeeper made a sensational stop in the opening minutes of the game and then later he stopped a penalty kick with diving save in the second half.
Barrera made three saves in the game to post the shutout.
The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute when
Tim Klefisch threaded a perfect pass to Zamora, who fired a nice shot inside the near post.
Cal State LA made it 2-0 on the 39th minute when
Damian Roszczyk took a pass from
Eddie Leon, beat the Bethesda goalkeeper to the ball and fired a shot inside the far post.
Laugsand made it 3-0 early in the second half with his goal in the 48th minute.
David Elizaga started the play with a pass to Roszczyk, who made a strong run before centering a pass to Laugsand, who finished beautifully to the left post.
Maciel rounded out the scoring when he took a pass from
Ryan Arkelian and made a long run toward the goal before firing a shot inside the far post.
Cal State LA will return to action with a road game at Point Loma on Saturday.
