RIVERSIDE -- Cal State LA's baseball team made it two wins in as many nights against the PacWest Conference's top program.
The Golden Eagles got a strong start from
Justin Davis, another home run from
Christian Broussard, Jr. and went on to beat California Baptist, 7-2, Friday night at James W. Totman Stadium. Cal State LA (2-0) jumped out to a 7-0 lead after three innings and four Golden Eagle pitchers made it stand up.
Anthony Ayala was 2-for-4 with one run scored,
Angel Sanchez was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI,
Tommy Pincin scored two runs and Broussard hit his third home run already this season to get the scoring started in the first.
Davis worked five innings and gave up five hits and one run. He walked one and struck out five.
George Alamillo went the next three innings, scattering five hits and allowing only one run. He didn't walk a batter and struck out three.
Daniel Ferrell got the first two outs in the ninth inning and
Gabriel Gentner ended the game with a three-pitch strikeout that left the bases loaded.
Cal State LA did not commit an error for the second straight game. California Baptist outhit the Golden Eagles, 10-8, but committed a pair of errors.
Broussard, who hit a pair of home runs and was the winning pitcher in Thursday's season opener, got the Golden Eagles off to a good start. He hit a solo home run with two outs in the first inning to stake the Golden Eagles to a quick 1-0 lead for the second straight game. Cal State LA then added three more runs in the second and three in the third to account for all the runs.
Pincin drew a walk to start the rally in the second. Ayala followed with a single and Sanchez delivered a run-scoring single to make it 2-0.
Sean Watkins reached on an error that allowed Ayala to come around and score from second base to make it 3-0 and a groundout by
Nathan Navarrete drove in Sanchez to make it 4-0.
Garrett Dean singled to start the three-run uprising in the third. Pincin walked and Ayala singled to load the bases. A fielder's choice grounder by Sanchez drove in Dean and Pincin scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-0.
Drew Seelman made it 7-0 with a run-scoring double to drive in Sanchez.
That was more than enough for Davis, who blanked the Lancers through four innings until Andrew Bash's solo home run in the fifth got California Baptist on the board. The Lancers added a run on D.J. Porter's run-scoring single in the sixth, but Alamillo tossed two shutout innings after that to keep the five-run advantage into the ninth.
Cal State LA will conclude the three-game series with California Baptist on Saturday with a home game at Reeder Field beginning at 2 p.m.
