LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's women's tennis team battled hard, but fell to a familiar foe Saturday at the Cal State LA Tennis Complex.
The Golden Eagles trailed after doubles and were unable to catch up in a 6-3 loss to former California Collegiate Athletic Association rival UC San Diego. Cal State LA is now an affiliate member of the PacWest Conference in women's tennis, while UC San Diego is an independent in the NCAA Division II West Region.
Cal State LA (6-3), ranked No. 29 in the nation, won one doubles point against No. 13 UC San Diego (7-0). The No. 1 team of
Nozomi Matsuoka and
Kayleigh Hall posted a big 8-4 win over UC San Diego's top duo of Britta Mosser and Shannon Theisen.
Iris Raileanu and
Isabella Lopez fell at No. 2 doubles, 8-3, and
Elizaveta Sokolova and
Luciana Di Laura lost at No. 3 doubles, 8-3.
Cal State LA, needing four wins in singles matches to take the match, managed two straight-set victories. Hall was a winner at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-3, while Sokolova won at No. 3 singles, also in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a home match against Cal State Northridge at 2 p.m.
