Golden Eagles Get To 100 First And Post Victory

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team put on quite a show Saturday night in its California Collegiate Athletic Association regular-season finale against Cal State San Marcos.

The Golden Eagles and the Cougars put on a classic shooting exhibition, but it was Cal State LA that hit 100 points first and then held on for a 101-99 victory over Cal State San Marcos in University Gym. Cal State LA (14-15, 9-11 CCAA) finishes with the No. 7 seed for the CCAA Championship Tournament and will travel to San Francisco to face No. 2 seed San Francisco State on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.

In their final home game of the season, the Golden Eagles shot 56.7 percent for the game and made just enough points to outlast the Cougars (18-10, 12-8 CCAA). Cal State LA honored its six seniors - Joshua Hopkins, Travis Hammonds, Roderick Evans-Taylor, Jordan Wilson, Jonathan Davis, Geoffrey Frid - in pregame ceremonies.

Wilson led four Golden Eagles in double figures with 26 points and five assists and Hammonds finished with 25 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Evans-Taylor had a big second half for Cal State LA and had 20 points and seven rebounds and Geoffrey Frid had 12 points and seven rebounds.

Josh Spiers had a game-high 33 points for Cal State San Marcos and was a phenominal 10-of-14 from 3-point range. Ethan Alvano had 23 points and eight assists and Joe Boyd had 22 points and seven rebounds.

Cal State LA was 38-of-67 from the field (56.7 percent) and made 11-of-25 from 3-point range, while Cal State San Marcos was 35-of-71 and 12-of-26 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 14-of-22 from the free-throw line, while the Cougars were 17-of-21. Cal State LA had a 39-31 rebounding edge and had 10 turnovers to eight for the Cougars.

It was close for almost all of the game and neither team could slow down the other. Cal State San Marcos never had a lead larger than three points and Cal State LA never led by more than 10.

Cal State LA started quickly and opened up a 16-6 lead, but that advantage was almost gone by halftime as the Cougars cut it to 45-43 by the break.

The second half was a shootout and it eventually became a contest to see who would hit 100 points first. Cal State LA took an 85-76 lead with 5:39 to go after a layup by Hammonds and still led by nine points after a 3-pointer by Garrett Carter, 88-79, with 5:14 to go.

Cal State San Marcos, though, tied it up at 94-94 after consecutive 3-pointers by Spiers, but Hammonds came back with a 3-pointer to put the Golden Eagles back ahead, 97-94. A layup by Evans-Taylor stretched the lead to 99-96 and a free throw by Wilson made it 100-96. Cal State San Marcos got another 3-pointer by Spiers to slice the lead to 100-99, but Wilson hit another free throw to account for the final margin and Cal State LA made a big stop at the end to prevail.
