Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Golden Eagles See Third Try Come Up Short

SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State LA's men's basketball tried a few new wrinkles, but the result was unfortunately the same Tuesday night against San Francisco State.

The Golden Eagles, the No. 7 seeds, lost to No. 2 seed San Francisco State, 93-67, in a first-round California Collegiate Athletic Association contest in The Swamp. Cal State LA (14-16) lost to the Gators (24-4) for the third time this season, although the Golden Eagles challenged the Gators in the third meeting before faltering in the end.

Travis Hammonds had an outstanding game for the Golden Eagles, pouring in a game-high 24 points. He also had seven rebounds and four assists. Jordan Wilson also played well with 18 points, four rebounds and two assists.

San Francisco State got 21 points from AJ Kahlon, 18 from Warren Jackson and 13 from Coley Apsay.

Cal State LA shot 43.3 percent (26-of-60) and was 10-of-31 from 3-point range. San Francisco State shot 55.1 percent (38-of-69) and was 11-of-24 from 3-point range. Cal State LA was 5-of-5 from the free-throw line, while San Francisco State was 6-of-11.

The Golden Eagles were out-rebounded, 40-26, and committed 14 turnovers to 10.

Cal State LA led by as many as five points in the first half before falling behind, 37-26, at halftime. The Golden Eagles pulled to within 47-40 after a 3-pointer by Roderick Evans-Taylor with 15 minutes to go, but San Francisco State responded with a 10-0 run - the second basket of which came after a missed double-dribble - and never looked back. The Gators remained wary of the Golden Eagles, though, and kept starters in the game until less than two minutes were left, but Cal State LA was unable to threaten late.

Cal State LA opened the game with a big lineup and it worked well early. Geoffrey Frid scored back-to-baskets to give the Golden Eagles a quick 4-0 lead and five straight points by Hammonds opened up an 11-6 lead. San Francisco State, though, was able to score points in bunches and used a pair of 10-0 runs in the opening half to take over. Baskets by Hammonds and Miles Ford gave the Golden Eagles a 15-12 advantage and a 3-pointer by Garrett Carter gave Cal State LA its last lead at 18-17. San Francisco State used its first 10-0 run to take a 27-18 lead and its second made it 37-23 before a 3-pointer by Wilson closed the gap to 37-26 at halftime.

Cal State LA threatened in the opening five minutes of the second half and got to within 47-40 after a 3-pointer by Evans-Taylor, but a third 10-0 run for the Gators pushed the margin to 17 points at 57-40 and San Francisco State maintained its edge the remainder of the game.

Cal State LA, which upset Chico State in Chico last year as a No. 8 seed, falls to 2-12 overall in conference tournament play in 12 appearances.

The loss marks the end of the Cal State LA careers for six seniors - Joshua Hopkins, Travis Hammonds, Roderick Evans-Taylor, Jordan Wilson, Jonathan Davis and Geoffrey Frid.
