LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's baseball team was done in by a big Cal State San Bernardino third inning on Friday night.
The Golden Eagles surrendered 10 runs in the third inning and fell to the Coyotes, 13-3, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest at Reeder Field. Cal State LA (8-4, 1-1 CCAA) gave up 12 hits, walked six and committed four errors.
Andrew Hermanson had two of Cal State LA's seven hits, while
Sean Watkins,
Drew Seelman and
Nathan Navarrete drove in runs.
The game got away from the Golden Eagles in the third inning, due partly to a poor decision on a sacrifice bunt that resulted in no one being retired, an error and a line drive that caught starting pitcher
James Mendez in his pitching hand. He tried to pitch through it, but ultimately had to come out.
Nate Adams came on in relief and gave the Golden Eagles 3 2/3 solid innings. After giving up three runs in the third, Adams pitched three scoreless innings.
Austin Nazabal pitched the final three innings for the Golden Eagles and allowed only a two-run home run to Cal State San Bernardino's Dominic Campeau. He walked two and struck out four.
Campeau had a big night and went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBI. A.J. Duran went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Sabino Ramirez allowed seven hits and one earned run over seven innings, while Garret Christiansen allowed one run over the final two innings.
The Golden Eagles trailed 11-0 before getting on the board in the fifth inning on a run-scoring double by Watkins that scored
Isaac Dominguez. Cal State LA got its second run in the seventh when Seelman's sacrifice fly scored
Angel Sanchez and the Golden Eagles got their final run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Navarrete.
Cal State LA will conclude the series with a doubleheader in San Bernardino's Fiscalini Field beginning at 11 a.m.
