LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team continued its recent 3-point barrage, but couldn't contain NCAA Division I Loyola Marymount.
The Golden Eagles hit 15 more 3-pointers, but Loyola Marymount shot 56.7 percent and had a big rebounding edge and posted an 87-66 win in Gersten Pavilion. The game was an exhibition game for Cal State LA and a regular-season game for the Lions.
Garrett Carter had a team-high 16 points for the Golden Eagles, while
Sean Estes was 5-of-7 from 3-point range and finished with 15 points.
Devin Means had nine points.
Eli Scott had 17 points to lead Loyola Marymount, while Zafir Williams had 16 points and Mattias Markusson had 14 points and eight rebounds.
Cal State LA was 15-of-39 from 3-point range, but just 6-of-26 inside the arc. The Golden Eagles were 9-of-12 from the free-throw line. Loyola Marymount was 39-of-60 from the floor and made 5-of-12 from 3-point range. The Lions enjoyed a 50-28 rebounding edge and committed 14 turnovers to 12 for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA got off to a tough start, but made things interesting in the first half. The Golden Eagles fell into an early 19-8 hold, but a 3-pointer by Means, a layup by
Khalil Williams and a 3-pointer by
Jalyn Pennie quickly made it 19-16. A layup by
Elliott Smith kept the margin at 21-18.
Three-pointers by Carter and Estes brought the Golden Eagles to within two points at 29-27 and Cal State LA had three possessions to tie or take the lead, but came up empty. Loyola Marymount then scored the next six points and settled for a 46-37 halftime lead.
Cal State LA pulled to within seven points at 51-44 with 15:38 to go after a steal and layup by Williams, but Loyola Marymount went on a 14-0 run and held double-digit leads the rest of the way.
Cal State LA will resume California Collegiate Athletic Association play on Friday with a game at San Francisco State.
