Golden Eagles Pick Up An Important CCAA Win

ARCATA -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team picked up an important California Collegiate Athletic Association road victory Sunday at Humboldt State.

The Golden Eagles, in a tight battle with several teams for spots in the CCAA Championship Tournament, got a second-half goal from Zarette Munoz-Aguilar and made it stand up in a 1-0 win over the 'Jacks at College Creek Park. Cal State LA (8-3-3, 6-2-2 CCAA) moved into second place in the CCAA with 20 points, while spoiling the final home game of the season for Humboldt State (6-9-1, 2-8-1 CCAA).

Munoz-Aguilar got the game's only goal of the game in the 58th minute. It was her first goal of the season and she is now second on the team in scoring with five points. Tatiana Zuvic started the play with a long free kick. Leslie Ramirez and Humboldt State goalkeeper Katelin Talbert battled for the ball, but it hit Paulina Chaidez and Munoz-Aguilar got to it and fired a hard shot into an empty net.

Cal State LA was out-shot, 16-11, and had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.

Adriana Maldonado made six saves to help the Golden Eagles record their fifth shutout of the season. Talbert made two saves for Humboldt State.

Both teams generated chances early in the first half, but alert defensive play kept the game scoreless. Chaidez had a shot in close cleared away by the 'Jacks defense in the third minute, while Humboldt State's Mary Swisher had a chance kept out by the Golden Eagle defense in the 10th minute. Munoz-Aguilar had a solid look at a goal in the 18th minute, but the 'Jacks were credited with a team save.

Chaidez, Munoz-Aguilar and Holly Abdelkader had three shots each for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA will return to action at home on Thursday in its Pink Game against Stanislaus State at 7 p.m.
