Golden Eagles Clinch CCAA Tourney Spot With Win

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team punched its ticket to the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament with a clutch victory over Stanislaus State on Thursday night.

The Golden Eagles got goals from Paulina Chaidez and Zarette Munoz-Aguilar in a 2:50 span of the second half and made them stand up in an exciting 2-1 win over the Warriors. Cal State LA (9-3-3, 7-2-2 CCAA) has the third spot locked up in the conference race with 23 points and has a chance to earn a first-round bye with a win on Saturday and a tie or loss by Sonoma State against San Francisco State.

Cal State LA had a narrow 16-15 edge in shots over Stanislaus State (10-5-2, 5-5-1 CCAA), while the Warriors had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.

After an even first half, the Golden Eagles came out firing on all cylinders early in the second half and took control of the match with a pair of goals. Chaidez opened the scoring with another spectacular goal, her conference-leading 10th of the season. Holly Abdelkader got the assist with a nice pass to Chaidez, who chipped a shot perfectly inside the far post in the upper corner of the net from distance.

Then, in the 55th minute, Chaidez once again attacked the Warrior defense and sent a nice pass to Munoz-Aguilar in the center of the field and she fired a beautiful shot inside the far post for her second goal of the season.

Although the Golden Eagles seemed to have things in hand, the Warriors cranked up the pressure in the final 20 minutes and caused some anxious moments down the stretch. Ilena Rivera cut the Cal State LA in half in the 73rd minute when she pounced on a failed clearance and rifled a shot inside the near post for her first goal of the season.

Cal State LA goalkeeper Adriana Maldonado made three of her five saves down the stretch to preserve the Golden Eagles' lead.

Cal State LA will conclude the regular season with a home game against Chico State on Saturday on Senior Day at 2 p.m.
