Golden Eagles Snap Streak With Win Over Broncos

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team put an end to its four-game losing streak with an important California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over Cal Poly Pomona.

The Golden Eagles grabbed a 36-29 halftime lead and answered every challenge down the stretch of a 71-59 win over the Broncos on Saturday. Cal State LA (7-9, 3-5 CCAA) bounced back nicely from a disappointing loss to San Francisco State on Thursday.

Cal State LA moved the ball well all night offensively and shot a sizzling 66.7 percent (24-of-36) for the game, including a red-hot 12-of-21 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were even better in the second half, making 80 percent of their shots (12-of-15), including 5-of-7 from 3-point range. Cal Poly Pomona (3-9, 1-7 CCAA) shot 46.9 percent (23-of-49), but made only 4-of-13 from 3-point range. Neither team shot well from the free-throw line, with Cal State LA going 11-of-22 and Cal Poly Pomona going 9-of-17.

Cal State LA had a 29-20 rebounding edge, but also committed 22 turnovers to just 14 for Cal Poly Pomona.

Travis Hammonds had an efficient night on offense, scoring a team-high 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting. He was 4-of-7 from 3-point range. Garrett Carter also had a strong game with 13 points, six rebounds and five assists, while Roderick Evans-Taylor and Jordan Nelson-Brown had nine points each.

Jeremy Dennis had a game-high 20 points for Cal Poly Pomona, while Riley Schaefer had 16 points and four rebounds.

Miles Ford had eight points and hit both of his 3-point shots, while Grant Arthur had five points while going 2-for-2 with a 3-pointer.

Cal State LA, which fell way behind in the first half on Thursday, was much better early in this one. The Golden Eagles went on a 9-2 run to break a 17-17 tie thanks to a 3-pointer by Ford, a layup by Carter, a 3-pointer by Arthur and a free throw by Evans-Taylor. Cal Poly Pomona responded and pulled to within 28-27, but Brandon Hitchman hit a free throw, Hammonds hit a 3-pointer, Nelson-Brown made a free throw and then hit a late 3-pointer to give the Golden Eagles a 36-29 halftime lead.

Cal State LA took its biggest lead of the game, 43-31, after a basket by Joshua Hopkins and a 3-pointer by Hopkins pushed the lead to 12 again, 54-42, with 9:20 to go. Cal Poly Pomona unleased a 10-0 run to get within 54-52 with 6:45 remaining , but Nelson-Brown started a 7-0 run with a 3-pointer and another basket to stop the run. Cal Poly Pomona got to within 65-58 with 1:32 to go, but Hammonds hit a big 3-pointer to put the game away seconds later.

Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a road game at Chico State.
