LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's men's soccer team posted a big season-opening victory over Saint Martin's, but it didn't come without a little adversity.
The Golden Eagles uncharacteristically surrendered a pair of early goals before taking control with a late barrage in the first half of a 6-2 win at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State LA trailed 2-1 in the 22
nd minute before storming back for four unanswered goals in the next 22 minutes to take control.
Cal State LA also had the only goal of the second half to account for the final margin of victory.
The Golden Eagles had a hefty 27-5 edge in shots and a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks and was able to overcome its shaky start.
Cal State LA got a pair of goals from
Dennis Rognstad and one each from
Jonathan Hinojosa,
Steven Eberle,
Tim Klefisch and
Tim Eiben.
Dan Arnoll and
Steven Barrera combined effort in goal.
The Saints of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Jake Zimmer alertly got to a loose ball after a collision in the box involving Arnoll and knocked it into an empty net.
Hinojosa tied it in the 18
th minute when he stole the ball, dribbled toward the center of the field and drilled a perfectly-placed shot from outside the box just inside the near post.
The Saints took their second and final lead in the 22
nd minute when Kyle Witzel was able to flick a pass right in front of the net to Sebastian Navarro, who had a point-blank look and didn't miss.
Cal State LA quickly tied it again in the 25
th minute, this time when Eberle took a nice pass from Hinojosa and shot nicely inside the far post to make it 2-2.
The Golden Eagles got the go-ahead goal in the 32
nd minute when Klefisch scored from right in front of the net on a nice set-up from Rognstad. Eiben also had an assist on the play.
Cal State LA made it 4-2 in the 37
th minute when Rognstad converted from in close on a nice pass from
Femi Kaffo and Eiben made it 5-2 in the 44
th minute when he headed in a corner kick from
Rigoberto Maciel.
Rognstad finished the scoring in the 74
th minute when he knocked in a nice cross from
Hakon Laugsand.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home match against Point Loma at 7 p.m.
