LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's men's soccer team battled a quality opponent to a 1-1 draw Saturday night at Jesse Owens Track.
The Golden Eagles scored the only goal of the first half on a beautiful effort by
Steven Eberle, but Point Loma got the equalizer in the 65
th minute and neither team was able to score again through regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods.
No. 24 Cal State LA (1-0-1), which gave up two early goals in a 6-2 win over Saint Martin's on Thursday, was stingier on defense on Saturday. The game figured to be low-scoring with both teams among the nation's leaders in defense a year ago.
Point Loma had an edge in the first half in possession time, but the majority of it was spent in the Sea Lions' end of the field. Cal State LA stayed patient and limited Point Loma to just one harmless shot in the first 45 minutes.
Things opened up just a bit in the second half, but good scoring chances were few and far between. Michael Lambert made three saves for Point Loma, while
Dan Arnoll made one save for Cal State LA.
Cal State LA had a 9-7 edge in shots and a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Golden Eagles struck first in the 36
th minute on spectacular goal by Eberle, who scored his second of the young season. After the Golden Eagles generated an attack,
Samuel Croucher sent a nice pass into the box to Eberle, who wheeled around quickly and fired a shot up over Lambert and into the net.
Cal State LA had a 3-1 advantage in shots in the first half.
The Golden Eagles almost got a big break to make it 2-0 early in the second half when a Point Loma headed a ball toward his own goal that Lambert was just able to keep out for a corner kick.
Point Loma got the tying goal in the 65
th minute. It started with a nice run down the flank by Mitch Wheelon, who sent a low pass across the box that found Keyran Kelly on the other side for a quick shot into the goal to make it 1-1.
The Sea Lions then just missed taking the lead in the 73
rd minute when Nico Tagaloa sent a shot over Arnoll that bounced off the crossbar. Chris Reingen raced to the rebound and, with Arnoll aggressively cutting down the angle, sent a shot wide.
Femi Kaffo had a good look for the Golden Eagles in the 74
th minute, but Lambert was able to make the save. Eberle had a shot from distance sail high late in the regulation.
The defenses dominated the two overtime periods.
Cal State LA will return to action on Tuesday with a non-conference match against conference foe Cal Poly Pomona in Pomona.
