LA JOLLA -- Cal State LA's baseball team was unable to post a second straight win over No. 5 UC San Diego in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game on Friday.
The Golden Eagles collected nine hits, but also committed four errors and UC San Diego evened the four-game conference series with a 7-3 victory in La Jolla. Cal State LA (5-12, 4-2 CCAA) pulled to within 4-3 in the top of the sixth, but the Tritons scored once in the bottom of the sixth and twice in the bottom of the seventh to put the game away.
Christian Broussard, Jr. pitched six solid innings for the Golden Eagles, allowing six hits and three earned runs while walking three and striking out five.
James Mendez allowed two hits and one earned run in the seventh and
Kyle Villa tossed a scoreless eighth inning. Alon Leichmann allowed eight hits and two runs over six innings to get the win for the Tritons (15-3, 5-1 CCAA).
Nathan Navarrete went 2-for-3 and scored all three runs for the Golden Eagles, while
Anthony Moreno and
Angel Sanchez had two hits each.
The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a run-scoring single by Sanchez, but the Tritons got single runs in the second and third on sacrifice flies by JD Hearn and Vince Mori to take a 2-1 lead. Cal State LA tied it on a run-scoring single by Moreno in the fourth, but UC San Diego got a two-run triple by Gradeigh Sanchez in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good.
Cal State LA made it 4-3 in the sixth when Navarrete was hit by a pitch, stole second, took third on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Isaac Dominguez. The Tritons, though, got an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth and added two more runs in the seventh on a two-run triple by Brandon Shirley.
Cal State LA will resume the series with a game at UC San Diego on Saturday at 2 p.m. A series finale on Sunday at Reeder Field is still pending due to weather.
