Golden Eagles Get Important Win At CS East Bay

HAYWARD -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team picked up a win it probably had to have Saturday night its quest to secure one of the eight spots to the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament.

The Golden Eagles limited Cal State East Bay to just 24.5 percent shooting in a 69-56 win in Pioneer Gym. Cal State LA (8-17, 7-11 CCAA) won for the fifth time in its last six games and kept its one-game lead over Stanislaus State for the eighth and final spot in the conference tournament. The Golden Eagles also pulled two games ahead of Cal State San Bernardino with two games remaining. The Golden Eagles also crept to within one game of seventh-place Sonoma State. Cal State LA can clinch a spot in the tournament with a win over Stanislaus State on Thursday in the Eagles Nest.

Jonathan Davis led the Golden Eagles on Saturday with 17 points and four rebounds, while Andre McPhail had 10 points and eight rebounds, Dushon Carter had 10 points, Joshua Munzon had nine points and seven rebounds and Duce Zaid had nine points and five rebounds. Justin Snavely had eight points and six rebounds.

Patrick Marr had 16 points to lead Cal State East Bay (9-17, 5-14 CCAA), while Jalen Richard had 13 points.

Cal State LA was efficient on offense on Saturday, connecting on 26-of-49 field-goal attempts (53.1 percent). Cal State East Bay managed only 13-of-53 (24.5 percent) from the field. The Golden Eagles were just 2-of-10 from 3-point range, while the Pioneers were 7-of-21. The Golden Eagles made 15-of-25 free-throw attempts, while the Pioneers were 23-of-31.

Cal State LA had a 43-31 rebounding edge and commited 19 turnovers to 13 for Cal State East Bay.

The Golden Eagles never trailed after jumping out to a quick 8-2 lead. Cal State East Bay closed to within 15-12, but the Golden Eagles went on a 10-0 run to take control of the game. Geoffrey Frid made a basket to start the run, Snavely hit a free throw, Frid made another basket, Munzon made a layup and Davis converted a three-point play to give the Golden Eagles a 25-12 lead. The Golden Eagles settled for a 37-27 halftime lead after a 3-pointer by Munzon.

The Golden Eagles scored the first seven points of the second half to open up some breathing room. Snavely scored to open the half, Zaid converted a three-point play and then hit another layup to make it 44-27 early in the half. Cal State LA took its biggest lead of the game, 51-30, after a Zaid layup with 13:20 to go.

Cal State LA saw its lead sliced to 13 points before a pair of free throws by McPhail restored order. His dunk off an assist from Carter made it 59-44 with 6:37 to go and the Golden Eagles kept a comfortable margin the rest of the way.

Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with its big home game against Stanislaus State.
