CARSON -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team continued its winning ways with its second victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills in the last 11 days.
The Golden Eagles got a game-high 25 points from
Duce Zaid and held the Toros to just 32 percent shooting in a 71-56 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory in the Torodome. Cal State LA (7-16, 6-10 CCAA) won its fourth straight game and held its position in the eighth spot for the CCAA Championship Tournament. The Golden Eagles are 1 1/2 games behind Sonoma State and San Francisco State and 1 1/2 games ahead of Cal State San Bernardino.
Zaid had another big offensive performance to lead the charge. He just missed a double-double with nine rebounds and he was a perfect 11-for-11 from the free-throw line.
Dushon Carter had 13 points and five assists, while
Joshua Munzon had 12 points and six rebounds.
Justin Sadler had a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double for the Toros (10-14, 4-12 CCAA), while Vincent Golson had 15 points.
Jonathan Davis and
Joshua Hopkins had six points each, while
Collin Johnson had seven rebounds.
Cal State LA fell behind early, 9-2, but quickly tied the game at 11-11 after a basket by
Geoffrey Frid. The Golden Eagles trailed again, 19-15, before taking the lead for good with a 12-0 run. Zaid hit a pair of free throws to start the run and a layup by Johnson tied it. Carter then hit back-to-back layups to give the Golden Eagles the lead and four free throws by Zaid made it 27-19. Cal State LA settled for a 27-21 halftime lead.
Golson opened the second half with a 3-pointer to make it 27-24, but Munzon countered with a 3-pointer, Zaid converted a three-point play and Davis made a basket to give the Golden Eagles a 35-25 lead.
After the Toros cut the deficit to six points, 38-32, Cal State LA went on a 9-1 run to boost the lead back to 14 points, 47-33. Munzon and Davis scored baskets to start the run, Munzon then hit a 3-pointer and
Andre McPhail scored to give the Golden Eagles the 14-point edge.
A 3-pointer by Hopkins gave the Golden Eagles a 50-35 lead with 9:27 to go and a 3-pointer by Zaid gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead, 55-37, with seven minutes to play. Cal State LA led by at least 11 points the rest of the way.
Cal State LA will return to action with a road game on Friday at Cal State Monterey Bay.
