CHICO – Cal State LA's men's soccer team completed an exceptional week with a gritty victory Friday in Chico.
Less than 48 hours after a big win over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Wednesday, the Golden Eagles got a goal early in the second half and made it stand up for a 1-0 win over Chico State at Chico's University Stadium. Cal State LA (7-1-3, 5-1 CCAA) is tied for the lead in the conference with 15 points.
The Golden Eagles got the only goal of the game in the 55
th minute thanks to a goal from
Shahin Hemat.
Ryan Arkelian started a counter attack with a pass to Hemat, who got behind the defense and, after two touches, beat the goalkeeper to the far post from 10 yards out for his second goal of the season. Arkelian picked up his first point of the season with the assist.
Cal State LA picked up its second straight shutout thanks to some stout defending and the goalkeeping of
Dan Arnoll. Chico State had a 16-6 edge in shots and a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks, but Cal State LA successfully kept the Wildcats (3-5-3, 2-3-2 CCAA) off the board.
Chico State was coming off big wins last week over Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona.
Chico State's Carter Johnson took a shot in the 87
th minute that was saved by Arnoll and led to a corner kick. Johnson took the corner kick, but a header by Chico State's Alex Fluitt was blocked and that was Chico State's final attempt.
