Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 13 Golden Eagles Beat Toros For A Second Time

LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's men's soccer team got a second straight win over California Collegiate Athletic Association rival Cal State Dominguez Hills on Wednesday and this one was for points.

The Golden Eagles, who beat the Toros in a non-conference game in September, blanked Cal State Dominguez Hills for a second time on Wednesday, 2-0, in a CCAA contest at Jesse Owens Track. The No. 13 Golden Eagles (6-1-3, 4-1 CCAA) scored once in each half to get the win over the No. 20 Toros (7-3-1, 4-1 CCAA), who suffered their first conference loss of the season.

Cal State LA took advantage of a Cal State Dominguez Hills foul on Hakon Laugsand just outside the box in the fourth minute of play. Ihsan Kalkan took the free kick for the Golden Eagles and hit a beautiful shot just inside the far post for his second goal of the season.

The Golden Eagles made that lead stand up thanks to some outstanding defensive work and effective possession. Cal State LA got the all-important second goal in the 82nd minute when Shahin Hemat got the ball over to Steven Eberle and the Golden Eagles' leading scorer drilled a brilliant shot to the far corner of the net for his team-leading sixth goal of the season.

Cal State Dominguez Hills entered the game with one of the highest-scoring offenses in the West Region, but was blanked for the second time by the Golden Eagles. Goalkeeper Steven Barrera made three saves, including an outstanding diving save of a shot by Bruno Montini in the second half.

Cal State Dominguez Hills goalkeeper Chase Gentry also came up big in the second half and made important stops on Cal State LA's Tim Klefisch and Eberle down the stretch.

Cal State Dominguez Hills had a 10-9 advantage in shots, while Cal State LA had a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.

Eberle had a strong match with four shots, while Kalkan and Jonathan Hinojosa had two shots each. The Golden Eagle defenders Kalkan, Adrian Diaz, Antonio Rosas, Troy Dumlao and Tim Eiben did an effective job limiting the Toros' high-octane offense.

Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a road game at Chico State at 4:30 p.m.
