Golden Eagles Pick Up Big WIn Over Coyotes

LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's men's soccer team badly needed a win on Sunday and the Golden Eagles got it in a tense California Collegiate Athletic Association battle with Cal State San Bernardino.
 
Hakon Laugsand's dramatic goal in the 71st minute lifted the Golden Eagles to a 1-0 victory over the Coyotes at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State LA (8-4-3, 6-4 CCAA) snapped a three-match losing streak and moved back into a tie for fifth place in a tightly-packed CCAA race. The Golden Eagles have 18 points and are tied with Cal State Dominguez Hills with two games left. Cal State San Bernardino (7-5-1, 5-4-1 CCAA) slipped back to a tie for seventh.
 
UC San Diego leads with 25 points, while Chico State is second with 23 points and has finished its conference schedule. Cal Poly Pomona is third with 22 points and Sonoma State is fourth with 20 points.
 
Sunday's game with the Coyotes was a high-stakes contest and was a physical battle. Cal State San Bernardino was whistled for 22 fouls, while Cal State LA had 12 fouls.
 
Both teams had 10 shots, while Cal State San Bernardino had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks. Cal State LA had a 6-3 edge in shots in the first half, while Cal State San Bernardino had a 7-4 edge in the second period.
 
Steven Barrera made one save for the Golden Eagles to pick up the shutout, while Jacob Huber made three saves for the Coyotes.
 
Steven Eberle and Shahin Hemat had two shots each for the Golden Eagles.
 
Cal State San Bernardino thought it had taken a 1-0 lead in the 55th minute when Kieron Coleman headed one into the goal, but the play was whistled offsides.
 
The Golden Eagles got the only goal of the game on a beautiful play in the 71st minute. Ihsan Kalkan sent a perfectly-placed ball into the box, where Laugsand elevated and drove the ball inside the far post.
 
The Golden Eagles honored their three seniors – Femi Kaffo, Shahin Hemat and Troy Dumlao – in pregame ceremonies.
 
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a road game at Humboldt State beginning at 3 p.m.
