ARCATA – Cal State LA's men's soccer team doesn't know its seeding or its first-round opponent yet, but the Golden Eagles do know they are heading back to the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament.
The Golden Eagles scored a pair of first-half goals and made them stand up in a 2-1 victory over Humboldt State on Thursday at College Creek Field. With the win, Cal State LA (9-4-3, 7-4 CCAA) clinched its sixth straight CCAA Tournament bid and its 10
th in the last 11 years. Cal State LA won conference tournament titles in 2011 and 2013.
Cal State LA now has 21 points in a tightly-packed CCAA pack with one match remaining on Saturday. The Golden Eagles are currently fifth and can finish anywhere between third and sixth. UC San Diego and Cal Poly Pomona are first with 25 points, Sonoma State and Chico State are tied for third with 23 points and the Golden Eagles are next with 21 points. Cal State San Bernardino (19 points) and Cal State Dominguez Hills (18 points) are vying for the final slot.
Cal State LA, which is ranked No. 5 in the most recent NCAA Division II West Region standings, got first-half goals from
Shahin Hemat and
Rigoberto Maciel and managed the game well in the second half. Humboldt State got its only goal from Mumbi Kwesele in the 85
th minute to make things interesting at the end.
Cal State LA had a 15-5 edge in shots, including an 11-1 advantage in the first half. The Golden Eagles also had an 8-3 edge in corner kicks, including a 5-1 advantage in the first half.
Steven Barrera made four saves, including a couple of nice, diving stops in the second half. Chris Cherms made six saves for Humboldt State.
Hakon Laugsand, who had the game-winning goal in the second half of Cal State LA's 1-0 win over Cal State San Bernardino on Sunday, continued his productive play of late with two assists on Thursday.
Hemat opened the scoring with his third goal of the season in the 36
th minute. Laugsand sent a cross toward the top of the box and an onrushing Hemat blasted a one-timer past Cherms for the goal.
Then, less than seven minutes later, Laugsand again set up the goal, this one by
Rigoberto Maciel, who sent a one-timer into the net for his second goal of the season.
Laugsand now has three assists on the season.
Cal State LA will conclude its regular season on Saturday with a game against Sonoma State. Due to weather conditions, the game will be played at Santa Rosa Junior College.
