TURLOCK -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team picked an inopportune time for a cold spell in a California Collegiate Athletic Association loss to Stanislaus State.
The Golden Eagles took a 67-64 lead with 4:24 to go in regulation, but didn't make another basket for nearly nine minutes and fell to the Warriors, 80-71 in overtime Friday at Fitzpatrick Arena. Cal State LA (2-10, 1-4 CCAA) scored the first two points of the overtime period to take a 69-67 lead, but Stanislaus State (5-5, 4-1 CCAA) scored the next 11 points to secure the win.
Joshua Munzon had 22 points to lead Cal State LA, while
Collin Johnson had 12 points and nine rebounds.
Geoffrey Frid had eight points and eight rebounds, while
Duce Zaid had eight points, eight rebounds and three steals.
Alek Carlson had a game-high 24 points for Stanislaus State, while Christian Bayne added 19 points and Stephen Evans had 15 points.
Cal State LA shot 40 percent for the game (24-of-60) and was 9-of-19 from 3-point range, while Stanislaus State shot 42.4 percent (25-of-59) and was 14-of-29 from 3-point distance. Cal State LA was 14-of-16 from the free-throw line, while Stanislaus State was 16-of-21. Cal State LA had a 41-32 rebounding edge, but also committed 13 turnovers to only seven for the Warriors.
The Golden Eagles erased a five-point deficit early in the second half and became locked in a tight game the rest of the way. Cal State LA trailed 36-33 at halftime and gave up the first basket of the second half, but a 3-pointer by Munzon and a basket by Frid tied it at 38-38. Stanislaus State moved out to a four-point lead at 44-40, but Cal State LA scored the next nine points - on baskets by Munzon and Frid, a 3-pointer by Munzon and a basket by
Joel Brokenbrough - to take a 49-44 lead. Cal State LA took its biggest lead of the game, 52-46, after a 3-pointer by Zaid with 11:25 to go, but Stanislaus State erased that advantage by scoring six straight points.
A layup by Zaid and two free throws by
Dushon Carter gave the Golden Eagles a 62-59 lead with 6:35 remaining, but Stanislaus State responded with five straight points to regain the lead. A jumper by Johnson tied it at 64-64 and a three-point play by Munzon gave the Golden Eagles a 67-64 lead with 4:24 to go. Evans tied it with a 3-pointer for Stanislaus State with 2:37 remaining and neither team scored again in regulation and the game headed into overtime.
Andre McPhail hit a pair of free throws to give the Golden Eagles their last lead at 69-67, but Stanislaus State scored the next 11 points to take the game.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a home game in the Eagles Nest against Cal State East Bay.
