LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team enjoyed its return home and put an end to its three-match losing streak.
The Golden Eagles jumped ahead early and never looked back in a 25-18, 26-24, 25-15 win over Cal State Monterey Bay Tuesday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (11-4, 4-3 CCAA) was coming off a tough five-set loss at Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday that ended a 0-3 week.
This week started out much better for the Golden Eagles, who completed a season sweep of Cal State Monterey Bay (3-8, 2-4 CCAA). Cal State L.A. won in four sets earlier this month in Seaside.
Iona Lofrano had another big match for the Golden Eagles and had a match-high 20 kills and eight digs.
Taylor Kushner added 10 kills and seven digs and
JamieAnn Bero had seven kills and five blocks.
Jessica Malcomb had 10 kills to lead the Otters. Victoria Clardy had seven kills and two blocks.
Kelsey Molnar had 39 set assists to go along with three kills, five digs and two blocks,
Angela Thurmond had six kills and two blocks and
Chloe Clancy had a team-high 12 digs.
The Golden Eagles never trailed while taking the opening set. A kill by Kushner gave the Golden Eagles a quick 15-7 lead and Lofrano scored the final five points on kills to complete the first set.
The second set was the best of the match and featured eight ties and four lead changes. The Golden Eagles had a 21-17 lead, but the Otters closed to within 21-20 after an ace by Leana Moleta and two Cal State L.A. attack errors. A kill by Bero got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-23, but a kill by Malcolm made it 24-24. A kill by Lofrano got the Golden Eagles their second set point and a Cal State Monterey Bay attack error gave Cal State L.A. the set.
Cal State L.A. fell behind early in the third set, but kills by Bero and Kushner and two by
Lauren Gomez sparked a 5-0 run that erased a 6-4 deficit. A solo block by Thurmond and kills by Lofrano and Thurmond helped the Golden Eagles open up a 16-9 lead and the Golden Eagles eventually took a 21-12 advantage after a block by Bero and Gomez. A kill by Gomez made it 23-15 and the Golden Eagles wrapped up the match after a pair of Cal State Monterey Bay errors.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a match at San Francisco State.
