LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team completed a busy week with a third consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Association victory.
The Golden Eagles handed Chico State its first conference loss of the year after beating the Wildcats, 26-24, 25-17, 25-20, Saturday night in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (10-1, 3-0 CCAA) is now just one of two teams still unbeaten in conference play. UC San Diego, which was idle on Saturday, is 2-0 in conference play.
Iona Lofrano had 12 kills to lead an efficient Cal State L.A. attack. The Golden Eagles hit at a .349 clip, while the Wildcats hit at a .118 percentage. Chico State (10-3, 2-1 CCAA) had 24 attack errors to 12 for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State L.A. had a 42-36 edge in kills and a big 9-3 advantage in blocks. The Golden Eagles also had a 6-3 edge in service aces.
JamieAnn Bero had nine kills and four blocks for the Golden Eagles, while
Lauren Gomez had seven kills, nine digs and two blocks and
Angela Thurmond had seven kills and four blocks.
Olivia Mediano had 12 kills for the Wildcats, while Anna Baytosh had eight kills. Torey Thompson had 33 set assists and nine digs.
Kelsey Molnar had 34 set assists and a pair of blocks for the Golden Eagles.
The opening set was a riveting one with both sides having a chance to win it. The Wildcats held an early 8-4 lead and Cal State L.A. rallied to take a 17-14 lead. The Wildcats got a set point at 24-23 following a kill by Hannah Wilkins, but a kill by Lofrano tied it at 24-24. The Golden Eagles then got a set point after an attack error by the Wildcats and a kill by Thurmond gave the Golden Eagles the set.
The Golden Eagles opened up a 15-7 lead in the second set, only to see the Wildcats close to within 19-16. Kills by Bero and Thurmond, an attack error, an ace by
Cynthia Giron and a kill by Thurmond got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-16. After a kill by Mediano saved one set point, a service error ended the set.
Cal State L.A. fell behind 4-1 in the third set, but opened up a 14-9 lead after a kill by Thurmond. The Wildcats got to within 17-15 and stayed within striking distance, but never could catch the Golden Eagles. A kill by
Taylor Kushner got the Golden Eagles to match point at 24-20 and a block by Bero and Kushner ended the match.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Wednesday with a home match against Cal Poly Pomona.
