CLAREMONT – Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team came up short against one of the top NCAA Division III programs in the country.
The Golden Eagles dropped all three doubles contests and fell in five of six singles matches in an 8-1 loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Friday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. Cal State L.A. (1-1) was coming off a season-opening win at Vanguard on Monday.
Cal State L.A. picked up its only point at No. 5 singles, where
Alexandra Makashov defeated Kyla Scott, 7-5, 6-3.
The Golden Eagles got off to a slow start by losing all three doubles matches. The closest battle came at No. 2 doubles where Claremont's Sarah Kukino and Scott earned a 9-8 decision over Cal State L.A.'s
Nozomi Matsuoka and Makashov.
Sonia Landeros played at No. 1 singles for the Golden Eagles and fell to Caroline Ward, 6-0, 6-3.
Nozomi Matsuoka fell at No. 2 singles, to Kukino, 6-3, 6-2,
Elizaveta Sokolova fell at No. 3 singles to Katie Kuosman, 6-2, 6-1,
Victoria Vo fell at No. 4 singles to Lindsay Brown, 6-1, 6-2 and
Snezana Ivanovic fell at No. 6 singles to Bria Smith, 6-0, 6-1.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 10 at Point Loma.
