LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team saw the Duce run wild Friday night in a thrilling California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over Cal State San Bernardino.

Cal State LA guard
Duce Zaid matched a career-high with 30 points, including a runner in the lane with 2.7 seconds remaining to lift the Golden Eagles to an 84-82 win over the Coyotes in the Eagles Nest. Zaid was virtually unstoppable in the second half when he scored 20 of his 30 points, many of them in spectacular fashion.

Cal State LA (2-8, 1-2 CCAA) snapped an eight-game losing streak to Cal State San Bernardino and beat the Coyotes in the Eagles Nest for the first time since 2010.

Zaid's heroics were just enough for the Golden Eagles to survive a huge game from Cal State San Bernardino's Anthony January, who had a team-high 28 points. Cal State LA led by as many as 11 points in the second half, but the Coyotes kept clawing their way back, finally tying the game at 82-82 after a basket by January off a nice inbounds pass from Brandon Staton.

The Golden Eagles, with head coach
Dieter Horton smartly declining to call timeout, pushed the ball upcourt and got it in the hands of Zaid. The Cal State LA senior then dribbled the clock down before driving past a defender and lofting a shot in the lane that hit nothing but net.

Cal State San Bernardino (3-4, 0-3 CCAA) had a potential game-winning desperation 3-pointer from midcourt by Zeke Deblase bounce off the rim and the Golden Eagles had their biggest win of the season.

Zaid, who sat out last season, also had 30 points in a loss to the Coyotes on March 1, 2014 and also in a win at Humboldt State on Feb. 20, 2014.

Joshua Munzon had 19 points for the Golden Eagles, including a clutch 15-of-16 performance from the free-throw line.
Collin Johnson had eight points and six rebounds.

Aaron Cheatum had 13 points and six rebounds for the Coyotes, while Staton had 11 points and two assists.

Cal State LA shot 45.6 percent for the game (26-of-57) and made 8-of-20 from 3-point range. Cal State San Bernardino shot 43.9 percent (25-of-57) and made 8-of-19 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 24-of-27 from the free-throw line, while the Coyotes were 24-of-39. Cal State LA hit all 11 of its attempts in the second half, while Cal State San Bernardino was 14-of-23 from the line in the second half.

Cal State LA had a 42-30 rebounding edge, but committed 18 turnovers to only eight for the Coyotes.

The Golden Eagles trailed for much of the first half before a pair of free throws by
Tahron Morrison, a tip-in by
Joel Brokenbrough and a 3-pointer by Zaid gave them their first lead at 21-18. The Golden Eagles led by as many as eight points after a 3-pointer by
Justin Snavely and a jumper in the paint by Zaid made it 33-25 and again at 41-33 after a layup by Brokenbrough and finally took an eight-point lead at halftime after a pair of free throws by Munzon.

Cal State LA took its biggest lead of the game at 63-52 after a 3-pointer by
Bobby Miles and a tip-in by
Geoffrey Frid with 10:55 to go, only to see Cal State San Bernardino slice the deficit to five points, 70-65, following a dunk by Cheatum. Zaid hit a 3-pointer to push the lead back to eight points, but the Coyotes got a 3-pointer by Cheatum, a dunk by January, a layup by Staton to make it 75-74. Cheatum eventually tied it with a jumper at 77-77 with 2:39 to go, but Zaid hit a pair of free throws and then knocked down a 3-pointer to make it 82-77 with 1:41 to go.

Deblase countered with a 3-pointer to make it 82-80 with 50 seconds left and the basket by January tied it for the final time with 14 seconds to go.

Zaid took it from there and calmly made his game-winner.

Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with an exhibition game against Bristol in the Eagles Nest at 3 p.m. The Golden Eagles will then be off until resuming conference play at Chico State on Dec. 31 at 3 p.m.
