Golden Eagles Pull Away For Exhibition Victory

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team will head into its break on an upswing after an exhibition win on Sunday against Bristol.

The Golden Eagles, who beat Northwest Nazarene and Cal State San Bernardino earlier in the week, pulled away in the second half for a 66-50 victory over Bristol in a chilly Eagles Nest. Cal State LA found itself tied with Bristol at 34-34 with 15 minutes to go and led by only one point, 44-43 with 8:30 to go before ending the game on a 22-7 run.

Joshua Munzon led four Golden Eagles in double figures with 15 points. Duce Zaid had 12 points, Joel Brokenbrough had 10 points and five rebounds and Andre McPhail had 10 points and four rebounds.

Jaylen Rose led Bristol with 16 points, while Michael Johnson had 15 points.

Cal State LA shot 41.3 percent (19-of-46) overall and was 4-of-11 from 3-point range. Bristol shot 35.3 percent (18-of-51) and was 5-of-16 from 3-point distance. The Golden Eagles were 24-of-30 from the free-throw line, while the Bears were 9-of-13.

Cal State LA had a 37-28 rebounding edge and committed 16 turnovers to 18 for the Bears.

Bristol opened the game with a three-point play by Jesse Henderson-Lewis, but the Golden Eagles scored the next eight points and never trailed again. McPhail, Justin Snavely and Brokenbrough hit two free throws each and Brokenbrough scored on a dunk to give the Golden Eagles the lead.

Cal State LA led by as many as 13 points in the first half before settling for a 29-22 halftime lead.

The Golden Eagles were caught at 34-34 early in the second half, but got a free throw from Brokenbrough, a jumper by Zaid and a 3-pointer by Munzon and took the lead for good. The Bears closed to within 44-43, but the Golden Eagles got two free throws each by Dushon Carter and Zaid to bump the lead to 48-43. After Bristol cut the lead to 48-45, McPhail hit a jumper and then Zaid scored eight straight points on a layup and back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Golden Eagles a 58-43 lead and put the game out of reach.

Cal State LA will return to California Collegiate Athletic Association action with a road game at Chico State on Thursday, Dec. 31 at 3 p.m.
