RIVERSIDE -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team dropped its season opener Friday against Holy Names at the PacWest-CCAA Challenge at California Baptist.

The Golden Eagles held a 41-30 lead late in the first half, but Holy Names cut the deficit to six by halftime and outscored Cal State LA, 53-39, in the second half to record the victory. Cal State LA shot just 37 percent in the second half, while Holy Names shot a sizzling 61.5 percent to get the come-from-behind win.

Joshua Munzon led the Golden Eagles with 17 points, while
Geoffrey Frid had 16 points and six rebounds and
Justin Snavely had 15 points and nine rebounds.
Andre McPhail and
Duce Zaid finished with 11 points each.

Joshua Crum had a game-high 23 points and seven assists for Holy Names, while Dante Robinson had 20 points and six rebounds.

Holy Names shot 50 percent for the game (26-of-52) and made half of its 16 attempts from 3-point range. Holy Names also made 28-of-36 from the free-throw line.

Cal State LA shot 47.3 percent for the game (26-of-55) and was 7-of-16 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 21-of-30 from the free-throw line.

The Golden Eagles had a 34-32 rebounding edge and committed 16 turnovers to 14 for Holy Names.

A layup by Frid and a 3-pointer by Snavely gave the Golden Eagles a 41-30 lead with 1:26 to go in the first half, but a 3-pointer by Robinson and a late basket by Isaiah Juarez made it 41-35 at halftime.

Holy Names then took a 51-49 lead after a 3-pointer by Crum with 14:26 to go and, after a layup by
Dushon Carter tied it, the Hawks scored the next seven points and never trailed again. Cal State LA trailed by as many as nine points and never got closer than three points down the stretch.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a game at California Baptist to conclude the two-day, two-conference tourney.
