Golden Eagles Drop Decision To Lancers

RIVERSIDE -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team had a rough outing Saturday night at California Baptist.

The Golden Eagles fell to 0-2 after an 82-41 loss to the host Lancers in the CCAA-PacWest Challenge in Van Dyne Gym. Cal State LA shot just 29.5 percent for the game and made only 13 baskets.

California Baptist (5-0), on the other hand, shot a more robust 48.5 percent and knocked down 10 of its 32 attempts from 3-point range. Cal State LA was just 2-of-11 from behind the arc.

The Golden Eagles also had a terrible time with turnovers, committing 24 to only 12 for the Lancers.

California Baptist owned a 40-28 rebounding edge.

Joshua Munzon and Bobby Miles had nine points each for the Golden Eagles.

Jordan Heading led California Baptist with 19 points, while Michael Smith had 13 points and seven rebounds. Taj Spencer added 11 points and five rebounds.

The Golden Eagles gave up the first 15 points of the game and never recovered. Cal State LA didn't get its first point until Miles converted a three-point play following a layup and free throw. A jumper by Tahron Morrison made it 15-5, but that was as close as the Golden Eagles would get.

Cal State LA trailed 44-20 at halftime and then got outscored, 38-21, in the second half.

Cal State LA will host Azusa Pacific in its home opener on Tuesday at 7 p.m. before hitting the road for games at Northwest Nazarene and Washington State.
