LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team made sure its opening California Collegiate Athletic Association weekend ended with a positive result.
The Golden Eagles completed a weekend sweep by defeating San Francisco State, 25-15, 15-25, 25-19, 25-19 Saturday afternoon in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (4-1, 2-0 CCAA) beat No. 22 Sonoma State on Friday and continued its solid play with a hard-fought four-set win over the Gators on Saturday.
Cal State L.A. was swept by Sonoma State and San Francisco State last season.
Iona Lofrano had 16 kills, three blocks and seven digs, while sophomore
JamieAnn Bero had another outstanding match with 16 kills, three blocks and two service aces. She had a hitting percentage of .519.
San Francisco State, which was coming off a three-set sweep over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday, received 12 kills from Jaclyn Clark and 11 kills from Bria Morgan.
Cal State L.A. had a 49-45 edge in kills and a 10-5 advantage in blocks. The Golden Eagles hit at a .256 percentage to .172 for San Francisco State. Both teams had seven service aces.
Freshman
Kelsey Molnar had another strong match with 35 set assists, three service aces and three kills. She also had nine digs.
April Reyes led the Golden Eagles with 16 digs
After the two teams traded 25-15 wins in the first two sets, Cal State L.A. took control of the match in the third set. The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 7-1 lead behind the serving of Molnar in the third set and never looked back. The Gators got to within 18-16 after a Cal State L.A. attack error, but three straight errors by the Gators made it 21-16. A kill by Cal State L.A.'s
Molly Lyons made it 22-17, a kill by Bero got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-19 and a block by Lofrano ended the set.
The fourth set played out much the same way. The Golden Eagles jumped out to an 8-2 lead following a kill by
Loreal Carter and eventually built up a 19-8 lead after a kill by Bero and an attack error. The Gators pulled to within 22-18, but a kill by
Kymberly Silveyra got the Golden Eagles to 23-18 and, after a kill by Jazmine Williams for the Gators, back-to-back kills by Lofrano ended the match.
Cal State L.A. will return to action with a road match at UC San Diego on Friday at 7 p.m.
