LA JOLLA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team came up big down the stretch and picked up a four-set win over nationally-ranked UC San Diego Friday night.
The Golden Eagles, facing the prospect of heading into a fifth set, instead took the final three points of the fourth frame to wrap up a 25-19, 23-25, 25-15, 27-25 victory over the No. 13 Tritons in RIMAC Arena. Cal State L.A. (5-1, 3-0 CCAA) won its third straight match and finds itself alone atop the California Collegiate Athletic Association as the only team still undefeated in conference play.
Cal State L.A. also posted its third straight win over UC San Diego (5-3, 3-1 CCAA), which dropped its first conference match of the season.
Iona Lofrano had an outstanding match for the Golden Eagles to lead the way. She had a match-high 20 kills and 20 digs and hit at a .356 percentage.
Loreal Carter had 12 kills and four service aces, while
Kelsey Molnar had a 39 set assists, seven kills, nine digs and two blocks.
Cal State L.A. had a 55-51 edge in kills and outhit the Tritons, .264-.136. The Golden Eagles also had a 6-4 advantage in service aces and enjoyed a big 10.5 - 5 edge in blocks.
JamieAnn Bero and
Mia Alcaraz had four blocks each to lead the way.
Kymberly Silveyra had seven kills, including the one that ended the match, 16 digs and three blocks, while
April Reyes had 17 digs.
The Golden Eagles got off to a strong start and won six straight points to extend a 14-12 lead to 20-12. Carter started the run with a kill and then served for five consecutive points. A block by Molnar made it 16-12, an ace by Carter and two attack errors made it 19-12 and a kill by Lofrano made it 20-12. An ace by
Colby Joseph gave the Golden Eagles a 23-15 lead, and kills by Lofrano and Carter ultimately ended the set.
UC San Diego edged the Golden Eagles in a tightly-contested second set. A block by Bero and Silveyra gave the Golden Eagles a 20-18 lead and a kill by Lofrano gave the Golden Eagles a 21-20 edge, but the Tritons won the next three points to take the lead. Back-to-back kills by Carter tied it at 23-23, but the Tritons won the next two points to even the match.
Cal State L.A. led for most of the third set and closed out the frame impressively. With a 19-15 lead, a kill by Carter, two attack errors, an ace by Carter, a block by Molnar and another ace by Carter gave the Golden Eagles a 2-1 lead.
The fourth set was close throughout. Trailing 19-16, the Golden Eagles got a kill by Lofrano, an attack error by the Tritons, a block by Bero and Lofrano and a kill by Bero to take a 20-19 lead. The Tritons had a pair of set point at 24-22, but a kill by Lofrano and a block by Carter and Alcaraz tied it at 24-24. The Tritons got another set point at 25-24, but the Golden Eagles got back-to-back kills from Lofrano and a kill by Silveyra to end the match.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a road match at Cal Poly Pomona.
