POMONA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team, coming off a stirring win over No. 13 UC San Diego on Friday, were poised for a tough California Collegiate Athletic Association road sweep before Cal Poly Pomona spoiled those plans.
The Golden Eagles held a 2-1 lead in sets and an 11-5 advantage in the fifth and final set before falling to the Broncos, 25-17, 23-25, 22-25, 25-17, 16-14 Saturday night in Darlene May Gym. Cal State L.A. (5-2, 3-1 CCAA) became the final CCAA team to lose a conference match and slipped out of first place.
The Golden Eagles hit at just a .089 percentage with 44 kills and 28 errors. Cal Poly Pomona (5-2, 3-2 CCAA) hit at a .136 clip with 62 kills and 35 errors. The Broncos had a 12-11 edge in blocks, while the Golden Eagles had an 8-4 edge in service aces.
Loreal Carter had 13 kills, two aces, 12 digs and two blocks for the Golden Eagles, while
Iona Lofrano had 10 kills, 17 digs and five blocks.
Kelsey Molnar had 34 set assists and 11 digs, while
April Reyes had a team-high 19 digs.
Deanna Blaine had 16 kills and 12 digs for the Broncos, while Lauren Jones had 13 kills and four blocks. Cal Poly Pomona had four players reach double figures in kills.
The Golden Eagles started slowly and, after dropping the first set, found themselves in a 20-16 hole in the second set. The Golden Eagles, though, rattled off seven straight points to take control of the set, taking a 23-16 lead after a kill by
Mia Alcaraz and a service ace by Carter. A kill by Lofrano made it 24-22 and, after the Broncos closed to within 24-23, a kill by Lofrano ended the set.
Cal State L.A. trailed late in the third set as well before coming up big down the stretch. Leading 23-22, the Golden Eagles got a kill by Lofrano and an ace from
Colby Joseph to take the set.
Cal State L.A. was unable to maintain its momentum in the fourth set and fell, 25-17, setting up the final set.
The Golden Eagles looked to have things going their way when they opened up an 11-5 lead. A kill by Carter, a block by Alcaraz and Lofrano, a kill by Lofrano, a kill by Molnar and an ace by Carter gave Cal State L.A. its six-point edge. That lead evaporated when Cal Poly Pomona scored seven straight points to take a 12-11 lead. A kill by
Kymberly Silveyra tied it at 12-12 and a Cal Poly Pomona attack error made it 13-12. The Golden Eagles then lost two straight points to face their first match point at 14-13, but a block by Alcaraz and Molnar tied it at 14-14. A service error and attack error, though, ended the match.
Cal State L.A. will return home for its next match on Friday at 7 p.m. against Cal State Monterey Bay.
