LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team enjoyed a triumphant return home Friday night in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.
In their first match since dropping a disappointing five-set match at Cal Poly Pomona last Saturday, the Golden Eagles started quickly and never looked back in a 25-13, 25-18, 25-11 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (6-2, 4-1 CCAA) climbed back into a first-place tie with Cal State San Bernardino in the conference.
Kymberly Silveyra had a team-high 12 kills and 10 digs to lead a balanced Cal State L.A. attack.
Loreal Carter and
JamieAnn Bero had nine kills each, while
Iona Lofrano had eight kills.
Julia Ashen had a team-high seven kills for Cal State Monterey Bay (1-8, 1-4 CCAA).
Cal State L.A. had a 46-17 advantage in kills and a 7-3 advantage in blocks. The Golden Eagles hit at a .337 percentage and limited Cal State Monterey Bay to a .000 percentage
The Golden Eagles scored six straight points behind the serving of Silveyra to erase an early 3-1 deficit in the opening set. Consecutive kills by Lofrano, Carter,
Mia Alcaraz and Silveyra gave the Golden Eagles an 18-10 lead and the Golden Eagles ultimately closed out the set on a kill by Bero.
The Golden Eagles trailed in the second set, 11-8, before scoring six points to take the lead for good. Kills by Silveyra and Alcaraz started the run and a block by Silveyra tied it at 11-11. Two straight attack errors and a service ace by
Kelsey Molnar made it 14-11 and the Golden Eagles began to pull away. A kill by Bero got the Golden Eagles to set point and a kill by Silveyra ended the set.
There was no letup in the Golden Eagles in the third set. Strong serving by Molnar, Silveyra and a service ace by
Lauren Gomez helped the Golden Eagles to a quick 15-4 edge. Cal State L.A. led comfortably the rest of the way and ended the match on a kill by Bero.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday night with a match against Cal State East Bay at 7 p.m.
