Box Score 2 LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team had a rough day at Reeder Field on Saturday and that meant a tough end to a disappointing series against UC San Diego.
The Golden Eagles fell behind early in both games and never recovered and dropped both ends of a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader by scores of 13-2 and 4-3. After letting two games get away from them in La Jolla, the Golden Eagles never led on Saturday.
Cal State L.A. (14-19, 12-15 CCAA) had a three-game winning streak heading into this four-game series, but has now lost four straight. UC San Diego (21-10, 17-7 CCAA) has won seven straight games.
The Tritons broke open the opener with a five-run fourth inning and put the contest away with four more runs in the eighth. In the nightcap, the Tritons scored once in the first and added another in the fourth and that was plenty for Troy Cruz, who tossed a four-hit, seven-inning shutout.
Cal State L.A. managed only six hits in the opener, three of them by
Cody Doyle. The Golden Eagle catcher, who earned CCAA and NCAA West Region Division II Player of the Week honors last week, had a pair of doubles.
Michael Mann was 3-for-5 with four RBI for the Tritons, while Brandon Shirley was 3-for-5 with two runs scored for UC San Diego. Justin Rahn was 3-for-6 with three RBI.
Chad Rieser, the second of four UC San Diego pitchers, picked up the win. Cal State L.A. starter
Greg Humbert took the loss.
Omar Jimenez pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the Golden Eagles.
Marcos Casillas allowed only one earned run over three innings of the nightcap, but took the loss, while Cruz went the distance for the Tritons to pick up the win.
Jordan Cavazos,
Chris Oropesa and Reed Reznicik combined to blank UC San Diego on just two hits over the final four innings. Reznicek struck out three in his one inning of work.
The Tritons took advantage of a Cal State L.A. error in the opening inning and took a 1-0 lead on Rahn's sacrifice fly and then got a run-scoring triple from Garrett Tuck to make it 2-0 in the fourth.
Cal State L.A. picked up only four singles in the game – by
Manny Acosta,
Kyle Peralta, Doyle and Humbert, who was the team's designated hitter in the nightcap.
Cal State L.A. will return to action in the opener of a four-game series at San Francisco State on Friday.
